Ted Joyce

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Ted, one of the Clubs great characters. Ted was a member and servant of the club for many years and he loved his Golf. Ted served the club in a number of ways, including as Chairman in 2012, Captain 2010, 2011 and 2013 and as Committee Member very recently. Unfortunately he had not been able to play Golf in the last year or so but he will be sadly missed by his many golfing friends, and vividly remembered for years to come!

Back to Golf

As you may have heard the Welsh Golf Union and the Welsh Government have announced that it is appropriate for golf Clubs to reopen for local members to provide exercise from Monday 18th May.

As there is some issue with “local”, the Government website says:
No journeys of any significant distance should be taken, but also states: People are asked to exercise good judgement and common sense. If you live in Cardiff and have driven to Porthcawl to exercise on the beach, you haven’t stayed local.

So it seems that it is left to our judgement, and the second statement suggests that it is reasonable to travel to Golf for our members.

Consequently the course will be open on Monday from 08:00, but only for members prepared to follow the Protocol below. Some of you may decide not to take up this option, but if you do you must realise that it is a major responsibility for golf clubs and golfers to ensure that our sport is conducted safely and responsibly. Full adherence to the provisions of the Protocol below is essential. It should be noted that the Government continues to monitor the situation closely and retains the right to reintroduce restrictions which could see golf clubs closed once again if the Protocol is not followed.

Essential Protocols that must be followed:

  • Members can only play Golf SINGLY or with ONE member of their own household (one ball or two ball).
  • Scorecards are not available, although a copy is on the website.
  • Visitors and Guests are not allowed at the moment.
  • Initially these will be 9 Hole rounds from the Yellow (Red/Black for Ladies) Tees, if you want to play 18 then you must give priority to those starting their rounds.
  • Do not approach your chosen starting tee until any other Golfers are completely clear.
  • Please park at distance from other cars and do not congregate in the Car Park as you wait for your chosen starting tee to be completely vacant. Your round can start at any tee.
  • DO NOT TOUCH doors, pins, other peoples golf balls.
  • MAINTAIN at least 2 M distancing from any person not in your household
  • This is a time of friendly unofficial Golf, your ball is counted as holed if it strikes the Pin, if it is less than 12” away then the next shot will be “given”
  • The Clubhouse will be locked. The changing rooms will be open with doors wedged open. Please try NOT to use these, but if you have to it is “one in one out”, wash your hands thoroughly as you enter and leave. Please clean up thoroughly.
  • After your round please leave the course immediately.
    • When the Lockdown started our main cutters were away being maintained, they are still in Lockdown! Consequently the greens and fairways will not be as short as is normal for May, enjoy the “natural” play! Bunkers will be raked each day but in the absence of rakes please smooth with club or foot after use.

I am sure that this will be a very welcome back to Golf for many, please respect the Club, the Protocols above and behave at all times so as to preserve the Safety of yourselves and others.
Remember that many of our members are in the “higher risk” age group.
Please note that we have not managed to source Hand Sanitiser, please bring your own if you feel that is appropriate
